About

Yoshio Fujimoto, a Japanese rally driver, achieved a significant milestone by winning the 1995 Safari Rally, becoming the first Japanese driver to secure victory in this challenging event.

In 1993, Fujimoto was selected by Ove Andersson, head of Toyota Team Europe (TTE), to join their ranks as a factory driver. This opportunity led him to undergo rigorous training in Cologne, Germany, where he adapted to left-hand drive vehicles and enhanced his physical and mental stamina. His debut in the Safari Rally came in 1994, although it ended prematurely due to early retirement.

Determined to succeed, Fujimoto dedicated five months in Kenya to prepare for the 1995 Safari Rally. He meticulously memorized the 3,000 km course by driving it multiple times and engaged in comprehensive physical and mental training to build resilience. His efforts paid off when he, alongside co-driver Arne Hertz, piloted the Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD (ST185) to victory, completing the rally in 17 hours, 38 minutes, and 27 seconds.

This victory not only marked a personal achievement for Fujimoto but also underscored Toyota’s commitment to rallying excellence. Fujimoto’s dedication and success in the Safari Rally remain a testament to his skill and perseverance in one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events.

His car is restored and now a museum piece:
