Message from Hon Maalim Mohamed

Once more I have the pleasure to welcome the enthusiasts to the 1995 555 Safari Rally This event presents an opportunity to the many foreign journalists and visitors who traditionally flock into Kenya at this time of year to sample our hospitality and rich scenic and tourist attractions. As a sporting event, the Rally has carved for itself a special place in the annual calendar of this Nation to an extent that has become synonymous with the Easter Holidays.

Although this year it is the turn of the 1995 Safari Rally not to be included in the full World Championship series, I am happy to note that the organisers have ingeniously turned what appeared to be a disadvantage into an advantage by setting a flexible entry requirement – thus attracting a record entry, which includes some of the classic cars of the Safari.

The high standards of organisation, together with the unique features of our natural terrain, have retained the status of the 555 Safari Rally as one of the toughest tests for both man and machine. This year, the entry of BAT as the main sponsor, has helped to lure many local and overseas enthusiasts, who will see the Rally maintain its usual excitement.

AS an all round sporting Nation, Kenya is proud to host these championships. Once more I say “Karibuni”

The route

The most notable change to the 1995 Safari route is that it has only three legs though I’m sure some driv- ers will say that Leg Three is more like two in one! The route is shorter and tighter. Itis 3,000 km as opposed to 3,500 in 1994 : in past years it sometimes reached almost 5,000 km.

Throughout the World Championship series, the recommendation is that everything ⁃ from scrutineering to prize giving ⁃ should be accomplished within five days. Another major difference is that there are no overnight stays outside Nairobi. This will be very welcome to the teams -1 to all competitors, in fact ⁃ because it considerably reduces the costs.

The servicing will be easier and cheaper too. If you look at the itinerary charts you will see that we have many very long competiti ve sections ⁃ ones that are over 100 kilometres. And the road sections are fewer and shorter.
